Stage genius Sir Peter Hall dies aged 86
SIR Peter Hall, the former National Theatre director has died aged 86 after suffering from dementia.
A stationmaster’s son, he won a scholarship to Cambridge and went on to found the Royal Shakespeare Company at age 30.
Leading the tributes, Vanessa Redgrave, 80, said: “I count myself very lucky to have worked with him.”
Current NT director Rufus Norris called Sir Peter a giant whose “shoulders supported the entirety of British theatre”.
And Sir David Hare, 70, added: “Every living playwright owes him a debt.”
Sir Patrick Stewart, 77, said he “transformed classical and modern theatre”.
Married four times, Sir Peter leaves a widow, Nicki Frei. Of his six children, four work in theatre or TV.
