Cash point

Three million families and pensioners are missing out on billions of pounds worth of vital financial help.

Figures from the Department for Work and Pensions reveal that £8.1billion worth of Pension Credit and Housing Benefit was left unclaimed by people who were entitled to the cash in the last year.

Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, said: “It’s extremely worrying that there has been no progress in the benefit take up figures despite there being 1.9 million UK pensioners in poverty.

“As much as £3.8bn in Pension Credit remains unclaimed by older people every year.”

Pensioners can contact Age UK on 0800 169 6565 or visit ageuk.org.uk.

Families can do a benefits check at turn2us.org.uk.
