‘Give forces vet­er­ans free uni places’

BRAVE St­ef­fan FORCES he­roes who served for 12 years or more would get free uni­ver­sity places un­der Lib Dem plans.

For­mer party leader and ex-Spe­cial Boat Ser­vice cap­tain Paddy Ash­down said: “The men and women who serve in our Armed Forces de­serve the ut­most sup­port and re­spect for their sac­ri­fice, but sadly this Gov­ern­ment has let them down.”

Lord Ash­down added: “We have got to start in­vest­ing prop­erly in those who serve our coun­try.”

His party’s peers plan to force the change in an Armed Forces Bill, which is go­ing through Par­lia­ment. The US al­ready has the pol­icy, the GI Bill.

Lib Dems said Royal Bri­tish Le­gion fig­ures show 120,000 vet­er­ans are un­em­ployed, a rate al­most dou­ble that of the gen­eral pop­u­la­tion.
