QI have coeliac disease and have been told I’m a candidate for brittle bones and fractures. Why is this?

AYour coeliac disease causes poor absorption of a variety of nutrients and calcium, which build bones up and keeps them strong, is one of them.

At the same time, vitamin D , which promotes calcium absorption from food, may not be well absorbed. Coeliac disease can also lead to low levels of sex hormones like oestrogen and testosterone both of which contribute to bone strength by promoting growth. So low levels may result in bone loss and the tendency to fractures. Make sure you eat plenty of calcium rich foods (dairy, broccoli, cauliflower) and foods rich in vitamin D (dairy, fatty fish) and keep taking calcium and vitamin D supplements from your doctor.

To top up your vitamin D get plenty of sunshine.
