YOSH FEARS SAINTS TOO UP & DOWN

- BY JOHN CROSS

MAYA YOSHIDA has warned Southampton are too inconsistent to catch the Premier League’s big guns.

It is 14 games since Saints last had successive wins and blew a chance to end that run against United, having beaten Crystal Palace on their previous outing.

Centre-back Yoshida (below) also has concerns about a lack of goals – Saints have managed just two wins from their last 12 home games and failed to score in nine of them.

He said: “We have to be more consistent, not sometimes win, sometimes lose. If we continue to play like this we can have more chances.

“There is nothing much different between the top teams – If we want to step up more we have to be better, more consistent. I believe we can do it.

“Especially second half we dominated a lot. They made a few chances – but, playing against a top team, the small detail makes a big difference. It can cost a lot. It’s really difficult to accept but that is why they are top of the table.

“Since the end of the season we couldn’t score enough, that’s the problem I think. We have to be more clinical for sure but defensively I think we did much better than last season. So the way we are going isn’t wrong.

“They had a few chances – maybe two chances and they score. That is the kind of the difference between Southampton and Manchester United but if we can play like this against teams in the top, hopefully we can step up against the teams in the middle.”
