NEED TO FIND OUT IF BEST PAL LOVES ME

-

Dear Coleen

I’ve been friends with a girl since we were around five and, now we’re adults, it’s safe to say she’s my best friend. I love spending time with her and don’t have another friend like her.

She often talks to me about how she wants a boyfriend, and has even said: “If we were a couple I reckon we’d be so cool together.” Recently it was her birthday, and at the end of the day she texted me saying that I was “amazing” and she “loved me so much”. However, this was followed by, “you’re my best friend”.

I don’t know whether she’s trying to drop hints. How do I let her know that I like her and would love to take things to the next level without ruining our friendship, especially if she doesn’t feel the same way?

Any help would be much appreciated!

When you know someone this well, it is hard to tell them how you feel because the consequences are much greater than if the object of your affection is someone you don’t know that well and might never see again.

You can always gauge how she feels by saying something like, “why have we never become a couple, because we’d be perfect together?” I’m sure you’ll be able to tell from her reaction whether she feels the same or not.

And, if she doesn’t share your feelings, then you must decide whether you can carry on being such close friends when you want more. Or will it break your heart when she meets someone else and falls in love?

I do know people who were good friends, tried being a couple and went back to being friends. The problem arises when one of you wants more than the other is willing to give.
