Bomb victim cop’s payout 33 years on
THE family of a police officer who died after the IRA Brighton bomb plot to assassinate PM Margaret Thatcher has won compensation 33 years on.
Metropolitan Police officer Jonathan Woods was known as the “sixth victim” of the attack on The Grand Hotel during the Tory Party conference.
He contracted mesothelioma after sifting through the wreckage by hand, looking for evidence, for 14 days and died last year.
Solicitor Andrew James said: “Jonathan Woods and 15 Met and 15 Sussex Police officers picked through the dust, which it turns out was contaminated with blue asbestos, but weren’t protected.” Further claims may follow.
The 1984 atrocity killed five and injured 34.
