QI’ve had a gastric band fitted and I want to have a baby. I’m taking special supplements and I want to know if I need to continue them when I get pregnant. It’s advisable to wait 12-18 months after surgery and for weight to stabilise before you get pregnant.

Tell your surgeon, your bariatric centre and your doctor that you want to get pregnant and then your antenatal care can be based on the type of surgery you’ve had.

AEating well during pregnancy is important for you and your baby. The food you eat now is probably quite different from before you had surgery. You should talk to your surgery centre about what special supplements you may need to ensure the health of your unborn baby. Though you’ll be eating less due to the gastric band, don’t worry about getting enough food to support your baby’s development. Your baby will take what it needs.
