How Blackburn woke the nation

eakfast show TONY Blackburn is a fresh-faced 22-year-old on his first day at Radio 1, 50 years ago today.

The Daily Mirror was there to snap him as he woke at 5am to host the station’s very first show. And today he returns to co-host a one-off breakfast show with Nick Grimshaw.

Grimmy, 33, jokes: “I don’t know that we’ll have too many songs that overlap.”

Three-day digital station Radio 1 Vintage is live on BBC iPlayer radio, DAB and online from 6am today until midnight on Monday.
