Why does it cost 55p to ring the Universal Credit helpline?

Tory minister Liz Truss failed to answer this question on live television, suggesting weakly that people should go to the Jobcentre in person – presumably at the cost of a bus fare given how many centres are currently closing.

Or perhaps people are expected to get on the bike they’ve already sold because they’ve got to wait six weeks for Universal Credit?
