- BY JASON BEATTIE Head of Politics

THE explosion in which Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia died could have been caused by Semtex.

The reporter was killed yards from her home in Bidnija in a blast that blew apart her Peugeot 108.

Police sources said the “much more powerful” explosive than that detonated in previous car bombs and pointed to Semtex.

It would be the first time the VICTIM Daphne Caruana Galizia plastic explosive, used by the IRA, had been deployed on the island. Witness Frans Sant said: “I saw a small explosion coming from the car. Seconds later, there was a larger explosion.” Ms Caruana Galizia, 53, was probing the Panama Papers that linked Malta’s Prime Minister Joseph Muscat to payments from Azerbaijan. Mr Muscat denies wrongdoing. Her son Matthew has said she was the victim of a “mafia state”.
