DOCUMENTARY

-

BBC2, 9pm On wasteland by the ferry port in Calais, 10,000 residents of the ‘Jungle’ faced eviction by the French authorities. And this extraordinary documentary was filmed deep inside the notorious migrant camp, capturing the final days before it erupted into flames a year ago.

Including interviews with residents, French police and British volunteers who helped build the camp, we witness events unfolding as the riot cops prepared to move in, before a vast blaze consumed the camp.

This film also captures the scale of the British volunteer aid effort, with a huge influx of donations arriving, including hot meals, shelter and sleeping bags.

But the ensuing chaos is shocking to see, and cameras revisit Calais over the subsequent months to discover, in place of the camp, mass homelessness and ongoing battles between migrants and police. SHOCKING Inside the Jungle
