England to wear poppies in game against Germans

ENGLAND will wear poppies when they play Germany on the eve of Remembrance Day.

FIFA fined the home nations for honouring war heroes at football games last year, but the governing body has amended its rule. The poppy can be displayed if opponents and contest organisers agree.

The home nations said: “It was important that clarity was brought. When there are international matches in the week leading up to and including Remembrance Sunday, it is the intention of all four home nations to seek permission... to display the poppy on armbands.”

Rules modified last month stop players wearing personal, political or religious symbols. England was fined £35,000 over armbands worn last Armistice Day. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland were fined for similar tributes. The FA said as a formality it will ask FIFA to allow poppies at Wembley, November 10.

The Royal British Legion said the emblem “has no political, religious or commercial meaning”.
