Moreno’s Liverpool love affair

- BY DAVID ANDERSON

ALBERTO MORENO has put his remarkable renaissance down to his love for Liverpool.

Moreno made just two Premier League starts last season after losing his left-back slot to James Milner, and his time on Merseyside looked to be drawing to a close when Andy Robertson arrived in the summer.

But the Spaniard knuckled down in training and has reclaimed his place as first-choice left-back under Jurgen Klopp (below).

Moreno has improved markedly on the error-prone defender who so frustrated Kopites in his first seasons.

And he crowned another non-stop display in Wednesday’s 3-0 Champions League win over Maribor by setting up Daniel Sturridge for the third goal.

Moreno said: “I’m happier now things are going well for me and I’d say so far this has been a decent season for me, if not the best in my career as a professional footballer.

“I’m nearly at my best, but none of this comes without very hard work. Helping the side has its roots in the sacrifices you make, the hard work in pre-season and the battling to get back in contention.

“All that is because of my desire to be here at Liverpool, one of the best clubs in the world.

“I live for Liverpool, I love Liverpool. I always want to win when I’m wearing the shirt of Liverpool.”

Moreno, 25, a £12million buy from Sevilla in August 2014, will have no split loyalties when he returns home to face his old side in the Reds’ next Champions League tie on November 21.

Liverpool can reach the knockout stages for the first time in nine years if they win and Moreno said: “To get through to the next round would be really special. The fans deserve a happy event like that.”
