1,000 blooms of sunflower is plantastic
A SUNFLOWER plant that produces more than 1,000 blooms every year has been created by scientists.
The plant, named Sunbelievable by seed firm Thompson & Morgan, flowers continuously from June until the first frosts. In trials, it was still blooming in late November.
Paul Masters, T&M’s head of horticulture, said: “Sunbelievable is an amazing breakthrough.”
Plant breeder Charles Valin said: “I was always disappointed by traditional pot sunflowers so I have crossed the very best with the very best to boost the plant’s performance.”
The secret is the new £15 sunflower hybrid does not set seed, so all its energy goes into creating flowers all summer long. It goes on sale next April.
