‘Waste’ food ploughed into ground as poor go hungry

- BY BEN GLAZE Deputy Political Editor

THE poor are missing out on surplus food because producers make more money by sending it to green energy firms, it emerged yesterday.

Hundreds of thousands of tons of “waste” food is sent to anaerobic digestion plants, or ploughed back into the ground because it is cheaper than sending it to the homeless and hungry.

Food charity FareShare is urging ministers to launch a £15million fund to cover storage and transport costs for 100,000 tons of food. Chief executive Lindsay Boswell told The Telegraph: “Food in perfect condition is turned into energy instead of feeding people because the Government gives energy firms a minimum price per unit.” Labour MP Frank Field said: “The Government must rig the tax system in favour of food going to the hungry.”
