Take heart from our campaign
This Christmas, while the rest of us were stuffing ourselves silly and enjoying time with family, 298 people remained without the one thing they desperately wanted and needed – a new heart.
The number of those in urgent need of surgery was actually up by 24%.
This year, the Mirror has campaigned consistently for a change in the organ donor law which would mean people have to opt out of becoming a donor rather than opting in.
It could save hundreds of lives and the plan is now out for public consultation.
Let’s hope by this time next year a new law is in place and far fewer Britons spend the festive period desperate for a new heart or any other organ.
