Jose blasts Scholes & Class of ‘92 legends as United hit back in style

- BY DAVID McDONNELL

JOSE MOURINHO laid into Paul Scholes and branded him a failed pundit after Manchester United got back to winning ways.

Scholes (right) had accused £89million Paul Pogba of “strolling” through

FROM BACK PAGE games. The Old Trafford legend also reckoned Mourinho was underperforming.

After Pogba set up goals for Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard to end a run of three draws, Mourinho replied with both barrels.

“I think the only thing Paul Scholes does is criticise,” he said. “I don’t think he comments, I think he criticises, which is a different thing.

“I think Scholes will be in history as a phenomenal player, not as a pundit. Not every one of us has to be phenomenal like he was as a player.”

Pogba, the club’s record signing, has been a target for Scholes. Mourinho countered: “Pogba tries to do his best all the time. Sometimes he plays very well, sometimes he plays well, sometimes he doesn’t play so well.

“It’s not Paul’s fault he makes much more money than Paul Scholes. It’s just the way football is.”

Mourinho, who has 25 trophies as a boss, added: “If Paul [Scholes] one day decides to be a manager, I wish he can be 25 per cent as successful as me.”

Ex-Reds skipper Gary Neville is also a critic and Mourinho claimed the Class of 92 want to be in charge at United. He said: “They would love to be at the club and that’s a problem I can’t resolve.”
