THE horror James Bulger’s mum felt at his murder in 1993 was deepened by the shock of learning two boys little older than him were his killers.

Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, both 10, were caught on CCTV leading James, a month off his third birthday, from Liverpool’s New Strand Shopping Centre.

She had let go of his hand for a split second to pay for pork chops.

At first, no one thought the boys could actually be responsibl­e for James’s murder. But the nation was soon to learn how calculatin­g and cruel the pair had been.

Now, in an extract from new book I Let Him Go, Denise Fergus, 50, recalls hearing how Thompson had joined mourners laying flowers by the train tracks in Walton where his body was found. She also shares her heartbreak at coming face to face with them during the trial – and her disbelief that their mums showed her no remorse...
