GO DOWN? AYEW MUST BE JOKING

Swan Jordan can’t suffer another drop after his Villa misery

- BY JAMES NURSEY

IN-FORM Jordan Ayew is desperate Swansea survive as he cannot bear to think about another relegation.

Ghana striker Ayew was part of the Aston Villa side that went down in disgrace with just 17 points in 2016.

It made for a brutal baptism for Ayew in his first season in English football after an £8.4million move from French club Lorient.

Now four goals in seven games suggests he might be ready to trouble Premier League defenders on a consistent basis.

But Ayew, who joined Swansea in January 2017 and helped them stay up last term, says survival is his sole concern at the top flight’s basement club.

Asked about relegation with Villa, Ayew said: “I don’t want to talk about it because it is in the past and it is something I would not wish for anyone to experience.

“The most important thing is we can still change the situation we are in and we have to keep fighting. I have confidence in the team and the players that we are going to stay up.

“Under the new manager Carlos Carvalhal (below) things are moving in the right direction. We just need to believe, have confidence and start picking up points because we have got into a crucial moment.

“This team is a family, it is about the collective. I don’t care about my personal aspect, but if I can score goals I will score goals to help the team. If I need to give an assist, I will give an assist.” Ayew’s superb goal against Wolves in an FA Cup replay win set up a fourth-round trip to Notts County on Saturday.

It was his third in new boss Carvalhal’s five games. Now he aims to continue his hot streak against Liverpool tonight. Ayew revealed: “The first day the new coach came in he took me to one side and told me what he was expecting from me. “I know I had to do much better. I had confidence with Paul Clement but it just did not work out, I don’t know why.

“We have to keep improving and fighting and the most important thing is that the team gets better.

“The team gave a solid performance against Wolves that is good for confidence ahead of Liverpool.”

Swansea were thumped 5–0 at Anfield on Boxing Day under caretaker boss Leon Britton.

Ayew admitted: “That was a bad evening but it is in the past. The most important thing is the future and Liverpool. We start this game at 0-0... and we will see what happens.”
