CAULKER’S ENGLAND DREAM

- BY JAMES NURSEY

FORMER Spurs defender Steven Caulker says he has not given up on playing for England again after cleaning up his act.

The big centre-back, who admitted last year that booze and gambling problems had taken him to the brink of suicide, is available on a Bosman after leaving QPR in December. Caulker, who earned £50,000 a week in the Premier League, estimates he spent 70 per cent of his football earnings on gambling. But Caulker, capped once by England in 2012, is now teetotal and hasn’t placed a bet in nearly a year.

Caulker, considering offers from Turkey and China, told ITV: “My goal is to get back to the top. Playing for England again seems far away but that is something I want to achieve.”

The 26-year-old, who spent a short time on loan at Liverpool two years ago, added: “Everyone deserves a second chance, a chance to prove themselves again.”
