2003: Demolition work began on Wembley Stadium.

2005: Dame Ellen MacArthur (above) set the world record as the fastest person to sail single-handed around the world. It took 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds.

2008: Premier League clubs agreed to examine plans for a new round of 10 competitive fixtures to be played abroad over one weekend in January.

2013: Liverpool announced that defender Jamie Carragher would retire at the end of the season.
