MOTHER OF ALL COMEBACKS FOR LAURA
Kenny is out to rule the world again, just six months after she became a mum
SUPERMUM Laura Kenny will rejoin Britain’s blazing saddles later this month – just six months after giving birth.
Kenny and her husband Jason, who have won 10 Olympic titles between them, were named in a 22-strong squad for the UCI track cycling world championships in Apeldoorn, starting on February 28.
They will be taking baby son Albie to Holland, but the queen bee of Great Britain’s team pursuit endurance squad claimed: “We’re just like any other working family.”
Kenny, 25, gave birth last August – and admits her rapid return to full throttle has left her “a bit shocked”, while she juggles the demands of motherhood and elite competition.
After a prolonged flirtation with retirement in 2017, Jason returned to competitive action at the Revolution Series in Manchester last month, reaffirming his intention to race at Tokyo 2020, and add to his record-equalling six Olympic titles with Team GB’s sprinters.
But his missus is going straight in at the deep end and said: “I can’t wait to get back in a Great Britain skinsuit and race at the World Championships again.
“Obviously, it’s going to be something we’ve never done before (taking an infant son along as part of the entourage).
“But having trained as a mum and dad we are getting used to it, getting into a routine and getting a lot of help at home from the grandparents.
“The last five months since Albie was born have been amazing, and my life has changed a lot, but Jason and I are loving every minute of being parents.
“I returned to training four months ago, and I guess I’ve been a bit shocked about how fast my form has started to come back. But every time we race we want to win, and the Worlds will be no different.
“I’m not putting too much pressure on myself in Apeldoorn – I’m interested to see how the team pursuit squad gets on with racing against the world’s best again.
“But it’s made all the sweeter by being on the track where I won my first elite world title seven years ago.
“I’m excited to be going back to where it all began.”
