Woman’s picnic on hanging rock
Snack at edge of cracked chalk cliff prone to collapse
A WOMAN sits calmly having a picnic despite the huge crack in the cliff beneath her.
She was snapped at the beauty spot where the chalk has collapsed several times in recent months.
Sid Saunders, who took the photos of the woman, said he saw her walk past a sign warning people not to go near the cliff edge because it is unstable.
He added: “When I looked back I could see to my horror she was sitting, eating and drinking on a large crack in the chalk.”
As he made his way towards her to warn her about the danger at Seaford in East Sussex, the woman got up and walked off.
STUPID
Sid, 74, of nearby Hastings, said: “I notice how stupid some people can be. This was one of the worst things I have seen.”
Coastguard Maritime Commander Mark Rodway said: “We are warning beachgoers and coastal walkers to exercise caution in the Seaford cliffs area.
“Don’t be tempted to go and investigate recent cracks or falls and don’t risk going to the edge to get a dramatic photo.”
Thousands of tons of chalk collapsed on to the beach in June.
Nearby a 23-year-old student stumbled and fell over the edge to her death after asking someone to take her photo while she jumped in the air on the 200ft-high cliff.
