Heads blast primary kids’ tables check
HEAD teachers slammed plans to introduce more tests for primary school children with a new times tables check this spring.
Around 290 primaries in England, involving 7,250 eight and nine-year-old pupils, are expected to take part in the initial trial.
But Nick Brook, deputy general secretary of school leaders’ union NAHT, said: “It won’t tell teachers anything they don’t know.
“A pupil’s primary school years are already cluttered with tests and checks.”
The Department for Education said the spring trial comes ahead of a full roll-out over two years.
School standards minister Nick Gibb said: “This will ensure all pupils start secondary school with fundamental mathematics to fulfil their potential.”
