What are problems with variable fees?
Education Secretary Damian Hinds has raised the idea of universities having variable fees. This would mean students pay more for degrees such as medicine, which lead to higher salaries on graduation. But Sally Hunt of University and College Union says linking degree prices to earnings is “flawed” as it “fails to acknowledge the many factors which affect graduate income”. Ex-Education Secretary Justine Greening says the plan could hamper social mobility as poorer students will opt for the cheaper courses rather than ones which could “unlock their potential.”
