That’s the way to do it! Cash drive to save Punch & Judy

- BY ADAM ASPINALL

A PUPPETEER has launched a fundraiser to save one of the country’s longest-running Punch and Judy shows.

Mark Poulton, 47, says a clampdown on taking children out of school during term-time is jeopardising his show.

His season is now just seven weeks of the school summer holidays and the June half-term.

The income from audience donations has fallen by up to three-quarters, forcing him to launch a £2,500 GoFundMe drive to meet his £5,000 overheads and ensure the show goes on at Weymouth beach in Dorset.

Mark, from Paignton, Devon, said: “Punch and Judy is a tradition in Weymouth that stretches back to the 1880s, making it an important part of the town’s history.

“I’ve had people from America and Australia come to see the show to tick it off their bucket lists.”
