Epileptic OAP ‘must pay’ for shop damage
A CHARITY shop made a pensioner pay £17 for a glass bowl she broke while having an epileptic fit.
Sandra Kirkham, 72, cut her foot on the glass as she writhed on the floor.
She came to with “blood everywhere” and a Mencap worker repeatedly telling her: “You’ve got to pay.”
Husband Kevan, 56, handed over £20 to buy £3 sandals she had tried on earlier and the worker in Congleton, Cheshire, kept £17 for the breakage.
Sandra said: “I was so angry. Mencap should be aware of illnesses like this.”
“All I can remember as I regained consciousness is the assistant kept saying ‘I’ve got to charge you’.”
The learning disability charity said it was “mortified” and has apologised to Sandra and refunded her.
