TATT’S THE WAY

-

The current MP for Tatton, Esther McVey, yesterday undid one of the worst cuts of the previous MP for Tatton, George Osborne, as the Tories sneaked out a spectacular U-turn on housing benefit policy on the last day before Parliament breaks up for Easter.

McVey, the new Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, scrapped rules stopping 18 to 21-year-olds from claiming housing benefit – a move that could have made thousands of young people homeless.

Young people will still have to sign up to the sinister-sounding “Youth Obligation” to qualify for housing help. But this is a huge step in the right direction.

And this column rarely has much opportunity to say that about Esther McVey.
