1926: Sir Jack Brabham, the Australian three-time Formula One world champion and the only driver to win the title in a car of his own constructi­on, was born.

1955: Duncan Edwards, one of Manchester United’s famous ‘Busby Babes’, made his first appearance for England in a 7-2 victory over Scotland at Wembley. He was killed three years later in the Munich air disaster. 1977: Red Rum won his record third Grand National, winning by 25 lengths from Churchtown Boy. 1993: Jonathan Davies kicked a record 10 goals as GB’s rugby league team set a new Test best win of 72-6 v France. 2002: Jockey Tony McCoy (left) broke Sir Gordon Richards’ record of 269 winners in a season.
