Village festival with ‘Nazis’ axed for ‘causing offence’
A TINY village has axed a wartime re-enactment featuring actors in Nazi uniforms “to avoid causing offence”.
The three-day event has been held for 25 years by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway with Levisham station turned into the German-occupied French village of “Le Visham”.
Past visitor Lee Hayward, 44, said: “This is a disgrace. My kids were fascinated and educated. It was tastefully done with dedicated people taking part. You can’t expunge history.”
A railway spokesman said: “The Equalities Act means the charity must avoid causing offence to any section of the public.”
Local councillor Janet Sanderson said: “You do get comments such as ‘My father fought in the war, what right does he have to wear that uniform?’”
