Miners’ leader Arthur Scargill ruled out a national ballot on whether to continue the fiveweek strike over Margaret Thatcher’s plans to cut production at 20 pits. A judge later ruled the strike illegal due to the lack of a ballot.

57 YEARS AGO (1961)

The Soviet Union won the race to put the first man into space. Major Yuri Gagarin orbited Earth for 108 minutes, travelling at more than 17,000 miles an hour, before landing safely.
