1,000 jobs lost at Jaguar Land Rover factory
CAR giant Jaguar Land Rover is to axe 1,000 jobs after a fall in sales, blaming “continuing headwinds impacting the industry”.
The cuts will be found by not renewing temporary contracts at its plant in Solihull, West Mids. A further 350 staff are reportedly being relocated from its Castle Bromwich factory to Solihull.
First-quarter sales of new Jags dropped 26% compared with the same period last year and Land Rovers fell 20%. The industry has warned of Brexit’s impact and a fall in demand for diesel cars.
JLR said: “We remain committed to our UK plants in which we have invested more than £4billion since 2010.” It added that it was “continuing to recruit large numbers of highly skilled engineers, graduates and apprentices” after investing in new products and technologies.
JLR has a 40,000 UK workforce, including 10,000 at Solihull. Shadow Business Secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey called the job cuts “deeply concerning”.
