Only 10 years ago, the then-League One outfit were in administration, fighting extinction – and their remarkable turnaround is not lost on manager Howe

The Cherries were also struggling earlier this season and were in the bottom three of the Premier League on Boxing Day.

But they would break through the 40-point barrier with a win against Manchester United to confirm a fourth successive season in the top flight.

Howe said: “Looking back is a healthy thing to do because very quickly in this game you can get lost and ignore what has happened previously and where you have come from.

“When you put all the things together and look where the club has been and the journey it has been on, it is incredible.

“If we can do it again and fulfil all our objectives, the players deserve huge credit.

“The players who have been here a long time get it, but the players who have joined since we have been in the Premier League may not realise the dark situation the club was in a few years ago.

“They are here to play, not to look back too far, but it does make you appreciate these moments and appreciate playing Manchester United in this situation.”

When Bournemouth were promoted from the Championship in 2015, few outside of Dean Court gave them a prayer of staying up. But the Cherries are now aiming for a top-half finish for the second season running, while fellow south coast club Southampton are looking set to go down.

Howe added: “The Premier League has got harder during the three years that we have been in it, so the scale of the achievement should never be lost.
