Salah sizzles at a red-hot Anfield but Roma rise from the ashes

- BY DAVID MADDOCK

MO SALAH produced one of the all-time great European displays to put Liverpool within touching distance of the Champions League Final.

But an unlikely comeback from Roma as they scored two late goals has left the Italians dreaming of another impossible result next week.

Salah had Anfield buzzing with two sublime finishes before half-time, with further strikes after the break from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, twice, putting the Reds five goals up.

But last-gasp goals from Edin Dzeko and Diego Perotti gave Roma hope.

Captain Jordan Henderson said Liverpool’s performance means they go to Rome confident of finishing the

job. The midfielder said: “We’re disappointed with the two goals as we felt we were in control.

“At the same time, we played well, we won the game and we’ll go there with a three-goal lead.

“We didn’t play our football as much in the last 20 minutes and their goals caused a few nerves. But we’ve got to stay confident.

“It felt like we were in full control but we basically gave them two goals, you can’t do that in the Champions League.

“Overall we have got to stay positive. We knew it would not be easy tonight, we know it will not be easy there. It will be a challenge, but one we will look forward to and one we will hopefully finish off.”

Eusebio Di Francesco’s men know another stunning comeback like they produced against Barcelona in Rome in the previous round will put them through to the final.

But Roma’s fightback in the last 10 minutes should not take the gloss off one of Liverpool’s finest-ever European nights.

And it should not detract from Salah’s masterclass on a night when he and Firmino (left) became the first Reds ever to score 10 goals in a European campaign.
