‘Slave had to walk to work in no shoes’
A MAN was allegedly made to walk a mile with no shoes, to work for nothing at a takeaway.
The “slave” was allegedly being exploited by the diner’s owner Hargit Singh Bariana, Newcastle crown court was told.
One man, who can’t be named, told a jury he had to work “round the clock” at takeaways owned by Bariana in Sunderland.
He said he was paid in “leftover food and liquor” and gave Bariana £96-aweek benefits for a room.
Bariana, 46, of Bebside, Blyth, denies requiring a person to do forced labour. He also denies robbery and being concerned in the supply of diazepam.
Prosecutor Christopher Knox said: “Bariana exploited people he knew were vulnerable.”
The case continues.
