6,000 skilled professionals barred from working in UK
THERESA May has been plunged into a new immigration scandal after it emerged thousands of skilled workers were barred from working in Britain.
Over 6,000 scientists, medics, engineers and other vital workers from outside the EU were denied work visas in the four months to March.
They included 1,518 applying for doctor roles and 361 for other health professions, according to Home Office figures obtained in a freedom of information request by the Campaign for Science and Engineering. CaSE chief Dr Sarah Main said: “Businesses and public services are being blocked at the last hurdle from recruiting the people they need.” The Home Office said ministers “fully recognise” the contribution but the immigration system must work “in the national interest”.
