Victory for a mother

My mother was very surprised to see your archive photo and picture letter (Your Voice, May 11) showing servicemen and women celebrating VE Day because it is of her, Sarah Gilmour, and friend Vicki.

Now 93, my mum told me she was on her way to Dagenham to visit her friend’s family for tea when they were stopped by an American soldier who asked them to go to a party. They both took their berets off, which they weren’t allowed to do in uniform and were worried about getting into trouble when the picture was taken. I thought the comment by the reader about my mum reminding her of the Princess Elizabeth was so fitting as she still looks like the Queen to this day! Sheila Gibson, Warminster, Wilts
