Missed chance to promote women
WHEN Thomas Markle let it be known, via his pals at TMZ, that he wouldn’t be walking his daughter Meghan down the aisle, all bets were on her mother taking his place.
Classy, composed and incredibly close to her only child, Doria Ragland would have been the perfect choice for Meghan.
Instead, the American actress asked her fatherin-law-to-be, Prince Charles to do the honours.
What a missed opportunity to turn a personal disappointment into something truly heartwarming and unique.
For a couple determined to do things on their own terms, it would have been so refreshing to see Meghan and her mother walking side by side to the altar. It would have been wonderful and fittingly unconventional.
Perhaps Doria didn’t want to do it. In that case, why couldn’t Meghan, head held high, have walked alone or with just her bridesmaids?
For someone with very strong views about women being independent, it would have been a bold feminist statement.
One thing it does show is just how right Prince Harry was when he said the Windsors were the family Meghan never had.
