- BY CHRISTOPHER BUCKTIN US Editor

MORE than 100 people died when an airliner crashed and exploded in Havana, Cuba, yesterday.

The Cubana Airline Boeing 737 jet came down in a field shortly after taking off from Jose Marti international airport.

It was carrying 104 passengers and nine crew, according to local media.

Three people survived and are in a critical condition in hospital.

Cuba’s president Miguel Díaz-Canel confirmed “there [was]) a high number of victims”, but did not give a figure.

Huge plumes of smoke were seen coming from the downed aircraft as firefighters battled the flames.

The domestic flight to Holguin came down at 12.30pm local time.
