DRINK-DRIVING DEUTSCH JAILED FOR 10 MONTHS

- BY DAVID YATES

JOCKEY Charlie Deutsch was yesterday handed a 10-month jail term for dangerous driving while over the drink-drive limit and escaping police custody after failing a breath test.

The 21-year-old, who won the Grand National Trial at Haydock in February, was also banned from driving for 17 months.

He drove off at speeds of up to 114mph in his Audi A4 after being stopped at the roadside by police in Cheltenham in March.

Deutsch (above), who pleaded guilty at Gloucester Crown Court, was recaptured only when a stinger was deployed after a 4.81-mile chase. “Your control of the car seems tenuous in the sense of safety and was highly dangerous to anyone else on the road,” said judge James Watson QC. Professional Jockeys Association boss Paul Struthers, who reported Deutsch to be “deeply embarrassed and ashamed”, said the rider plans to appeal against the sentence.
