We need vows to fix broken Britain
Time and time again during the royal wedding, commentators said it would change the nation. But within 24 hours of this royal fairy tale a 16-year-old was stabbed to death in London.
Harry and Meghan will no doubt be a talking point in hairdressing salons and at checkouts across the country, but once the royal frenzy has died down it will be back to the same old Britain – crime-ridden, economy stagnating, the NHS heading over a cliff-edge and an elitist education system for the few, not the many.
There have been 67 murders in the capital this year. You can have as many royal weddings as you like, but until the Tories are defeated, the UK will remain in a sorry state. Duncan Eaton, Southampton The royal wedding is over but wouldn’t it be amazing if we were able carry on that feeling of optimism for just a little bit longer? Meghan and Harry believe in caring for others and hopefully this can do some good for our country. If everyone cared a bit more perhaps we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in. Let’s hope they can use their influence to help the UK become a nicer place for all. C Moss Basingstoke, Hants So, a very overprivileged rich kid has married an overrated US actress and we’re all supposed to cheer. We live in a country which is totally divided, run by a Government that looks after a privileged few. The Tories can find thousands of police and millions of pounds for security for the royal wedding, but they can’t find money for over- stretched police forces around the country.
Mrs May has just created more Tory peers so she can win a vote in the House of Lords and cling on to power. As Kevin Maguire says, it’s just “bread and circuses”.
What this country needs is not a royal wedding, but a general election. Arthur Wood, Kippax, Leeds
What a difference a generation makes. I felt sympathy for Prince Charles who wasn’t originally allowed to marry the woman of f hi his choice, Camilla Parker Bowles, but it’s fine for Prince Harry to marry divorcee Meghan Markle.
I think we can all be grateful that times have moved on. This modern young couple could do a world of good for the Royal Family and the UK. E Preston, via email
I agree with Kevin Maguire, what a farce the so- called fairy tale wedding of the year was (Mirror, May 21). Good luck to Harry and Meghan, not that they need it, as they will spend the rest of their lives living in the lap of luxury. This country needs to grow up and get off its knees – and it’s time to get rid of
the Royal Family. Joe Fitzgerald, Liverpool
What a welcome breath of fresh air the format of the royal wedding was. While I’m no royalist, I hope the privileged couple can give ordinary people a voice and help change lives for the better. John Sedgwick Tamworth, Staffs
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding will go down in history because it broke the mould of royal tradition with all cultures and religions coming together. Marie Gosney Billingham, Teesside
