C4, 9pm Was Winston Churchill racist? Should we confront Horatio Nelson’s pro-slavery views?

Journalist Afua Hirsch ruffled feathers recently with her article “Toppling statues? Here’s why Nelson’s Column should be next”.

At a time when people all over the world are looking again at their national heroes, demanding that statues are torn down, should we do the same?

“The argument has now come DIFFERENT HISTORY Afua Hirsch to Britain,” says Afua. “We are asking which parts of history we should celebrate and which we should question.”

Of course, there is an official version of Britain’s history – the sugar-coated one that tells of a nation which won two world wars with a navy that ruled the waves and a global empire loved by all its subjects. But there is a dark side, “a toxic past”.

In this fascinating film, Afua searches for answers about some of the more uncomfortable aspects of our heroes.

“Don’t miss this heart-pounding hospital drama, exclusive to W, starring Rob Lowe as a military medic on a mission.”
