Despite its name, the Jerusalem artichoke has no relationship to Jerusalem. It is also called earth apple.

It is actually a species of sunflower native to North America.

Marilyn Monroe, then still called Norma Jean, was crowned Artichoke Queen of Castroville in Monterey County, in 1947.
