More to do on Grenfell

-

TODAY marks the first anniversary of a tragedy that should never have happened.

The burned-out shell of the Grenfell Tower stands as a bleak memorial to the 72 lives lost – 72 people who were failed by the private sector, the authorities and the state.

For too long the residents of Grenfell had their voices ignored and concerns overlooked. Since the disaster we have had lots of words of consolation and remorse but too little action.

It is unacceptable that so many of the families who were promised new accommodation have yet to be found a permanent home. It is scandalous that some survivors are still living in sub-standard temporary housing or hotels.

And it is a disgrace there are 300 high rises with similar cladding to Grenfell, but it has only been removed from 10 of them.

The survivors and the bereaved deserve more than sympathy and vapid promises that lessons will be learned.

If we want to honour their memory we should ensure that all social housing is safe, secure and fit for habitation.
