Pro-Brexit Wetherspoon chief calls time on European booze

PUB giant JD Wetherspoon is ditching German wheat beers in favour of UK versions because of Brexit.

The company, which is run by Leave backer Tim Martin, will also drop French champagne and prosecco in favour of UK sparking wines.

The chain boss, 63, blamed the move on the “protectionist system” within the EU.

Plans are for Europeanmade drinks to be phased out over the next six months to two years. Mr Martin said: “The EU’s customs union is a protectionist system which is widely misunderstood. It imposes tariffs on the 93% of the world that is not in the EU, keeping prices high for UK consumers. “Tariffs are imposed on wine from Australia, New Zealand and the US, and also on coffee, oranges, rice and more than 12,000 other products.”
