FAMILY CAN’T ACCEPT SEX CHANGE

-

Dear Coleen

My son is now a woman after undergoing gender reassignment surgery recently. I am doing my best to carry on as normal and be as supportive as I can, but my family are on at me because they’re not happy about it.

However, my child is happy and that’s the main thing, and my own partner is accepting and supportive, too. She is my daughter now and that’s that.

But what do I do about everyone else?

Coleen says

I can tell you’re finding it hard to tune out their opinions, but that’s what you have to do. This is their narrow-mindedness and their issue to deal with – not yours and not your daughter’s.

She is happy being her true self and living an authentic life, and that’s all a mother can hope for her child.

So stand up to your family – make it clear that your daughter’s happiness comes first and you don’t want to hear their opinions if it’s just them expressing their negativity.

It’s a shame they can’t be happy for her. Perhaps their attitudes will change in time, but there’s nothing you can do about it if they don’t. Just carry on supporting and being proud of your daughter.

You sound like a great mum who brought your child up to have the confidence to go through what she has. Well done.
