PM to weigh up gong for nuclear test vets
THERESA May has boosted the Daily Mirror’s campaign to honour Britain’s nuclear test veterans.
The Prime Minister yesterday pledged to consider calls to give them a medal after a plea from Labour MP Chris Evans.
Mrs May told MPs: “This is the first time the issue has been raised with me and I will look carefully at what you’ve said.” Hailing the commitment, Mr Evans said: “Our test veterans and their families have had to live with the effects of what they witnessed all those years ago. Their service needs to be recognised.
“I will be writing to her to see if she will back her words with action.” This week, Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson agreed to meet H-bomb experiment veterans in a “breakthrough” for our fight. The Mirror has campaigned to get veterans recognition since 2002, the 50th anniversary of the first British bomb test. All other nuclear powers give recognition or compensation to nuke vets.
