MULLER: IT’S RIGHT THE HEAT IS ON.. WE MUST WIN NOW

- FROM NEIL MOXLEY

THOMAS MULLER has admitted that the heat is on world champions Germany.

The Bayern Munich forward confirmed that there has been some deep soul-searching within Joachim Loew’s camp.

Defeat to Sweden on Saturday would all but end their interest in the competition.

And, in a brutal show of honesty, Muller asked the German public to back their team.

He said: “I know that the Germans are down because the reigning world champions have lost their opener.

“The warm-up matches weren’t much to write home about, either.

“In this team, we gave reason for criticism. I accept that, both from within the team and outside.

“Whenever Germany lose or play badly, there are 1,000 reasons. And, no matter how many questions there are, we will never make everyone happy.

“We are self-critical enough to deal with it, but what is important is that we look ahead.

“We have two major tasks – we have to win. The heat is on.

“But we will definitely not win them through self-hate and self-demolition.

“Both this squad and the coaching staff want nothing more than success. I really hope that people don’t lose their trust in us.

“You will ask questions, but I would ask you to stay with us.”

There were stories of splits in the German camp and Muller (below) admitted there are “factions” – but played down its importance.

He said: “I can confirm there are factions in the team – there is a solid Bayern group.

“There are several tables we sit at. Five, six or seven of us sit together for lunch. I sometimes change tables because I’m flexible.

“In 2012, there was an issue between Dortmund and Bayern players – but it’s totally different now.”
