Root determined to prove he’s the master of Tests, T20s and ODIs
JUSTIN ROSE reckons he needs an Open Championship victory to put the “sprinkles” on his career.
The English star is warming up for Carnoustie by hitting the links at the Scottish Open in Gullane this week.
It is 20 years since amateur Rose shot to prominence at Royal Birkdale in 1998, finishing fourth.
After turning pro the following day, he missed 21 cuts before finding his feet at the top level. He broke his major duck in 2013, winning the US Open and has 26 tour wins and an Olympic gold medal from Rio.
But Rose (right) says he needs another Major to be a ‘Hall of Famer’ as he reaches the peak of his powers.
He has six top-10 finishes in the last 14 Majors, and said: “Twenty years as a pro, that’s amazing. I feel like I’m at a great point in my career now where the icing is on the cake – but we’re looking for a little bit of cherry and decoration and sprinkles from this point on. “It’s been a great 20 years obviously, but I really feel like there’s an opportunity now for me to make it something special. “I’m missing an Open Championship. I’d love to be a SURREY are set to win the race to sign Liam Plunkett from Yorkshire after the England bowler was told he could move.
Plunkett has become a mainstay of England’s white-ball revolution under Eoin Morgan and Trevor Bayliss since the last World Cup.
And, with 71 wickets in 41 matches, only Trent Boult and Kagiso Rabada have taken more globally.
But his success has left him at odds with Yorkshire, who were less than impressed with him going to the IPL rather than play county cricket when the season started.
Plunkett would link up with England bowlers Tom and Sam Curran and ex-South Africa paceman Morne Morkel at the Oval in a formidable attack. multiple Major championship winner. It’s nice to have that monkey off my back having won one, but I’m beginning to crave more chances.
“For a long time, five, six, seven years of my early career I was trying to live up to that boy who finished fourth at The Open.
“I put that to bed at least in my mind, and I’ve gone on to achieve good things in the game and justified that performance.”
